Bon Secours Mercy Health Informatics Nurse Specialist in Richmond, Virginia

Under minimal supervision, the Informatics Nurse Specialist coordinates and monitors the analysis, design, implementation, evaluation and maintenance of clinical informatics applications and projects within the assigned site and/or patient population/service line. This role provides functional I&T link between technical and clinical staff. Plans and designs learning experiences and uses expertise in communities of practice, to deliver a variety of training interventions. Design and training is based upon identified needs at both the local system and system-wide levels, aligned with the organization’s strategic goals, quality measures, and patient experience

Essential Job Functions

Provides site and/or population specific support by monitoring informatics issues or problems for a site or population.

Coaches, mentors, and provides one-on-one support for unit directors and managers, Nursing Professional Development Specialist, Clinical Preceptors, Super Users and other members of the clinical team in gaining and maintaining competency in use of clinical information, technology and communication systems.

Synthesize data, information, and knowledge to clarify informatics issues or problems; analyzes multiple approaches/solutions to the informatics issue or problem, develops a recommended informatics solution for the specific issue or problem, and manage the process for implementing the solution to the informatics issue or problem.

Collaborates with Clinical Education and I&T Training Team in the development of curriculum and other resource materials; provides education and training for current and new customers.

Develops methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining clinical information system performance improvement results; consider factors related to safety, effectiveness, costs, and impact to patient care when problem-solving.

Collaborates with I&T Electronic Health Record (EHR) Training Team on the development of communication and training about future system changes, seasonal releases and planned downtime for clinical customers.

Develops and performs competency assessments related to clinician use of information systems, documents findings; designs and delivers targeted education, training and remediation in collaboration with I&T Training Team and Clinical Education, evaluates effectiveness of interventions.

Develops methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining clinical information system performance improvement results; consider factors related to safety, effectiveness, costs, and impact to patient care when problem-solving.

Handles complex issues and problems, and refers only the most complex issues to higher-level staff.

Possesses comprehensive knowledge of subject matter; provides leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group; may act as a "lead" or first-level supervisor.

Employment Qualifications

Required Minimum Education:

Graduate Degree (Masters)


Nursing Informatics or other Health Care related field

Licensure/Certification Required:

RN License

Licensure/Certification Preferred:

Specialty certification in Nursing Informatics or other healthcare related field; Credentialed Epic Trainer

Minimum Years and Type of Experience:

2 years Clinical Experience

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

Clinical care delivery, clinical processes, research and evaluation, business operations, current and emerging regulatory requirements, federal mandates, and national standards related to the use of technology in patient care.
