Exercise Physiologist - Southside Medical Center

II. EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:

A. Bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy, Allied Health, Exercise Science or Exercise Physiology. Certified by American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) as E.S. Exercise Specialist, American Association of Cardiovascular Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) as CCRP Certified Cardiac Rehabilitation Professional or master’s degree in Exercise Science/Exercise Physiology.

B. Current license to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia (if physical therapist)

C. Minimum 3 years previous experience in adult fitness and/or cardiac rehabilitation programs.

D. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or will agree to acquire/apply in first 30 days of employment.

E. Familiar with psycho-social and physical developmental needs of adult population ages 18 and up.

II. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

A. Reviews medical history, nursing intake and exercise history/ETT prior to goal setting session.

a. Becomes familiar with patient profiles, with special attention to musculoskeletal function and cardiovascular histories.

b. Calculate target heart range and risk stratification class, when appropriate, prior to six-minute walk test.

B. Educate patient in self-monitoring target heart rate (THR) and rate of perceived exertion (RPE).

C. Documents patient response to exercise, heart rate, ECG rhythm and any signs and symptoms patient may be having.

D. Performs six-minute walk test or sub max exercise tolerance test during initial evaluation and discharge and documents findings.

E. Writes exercise prescription for clinic based on results.

F. Documents prescription and assessment on individualized treatment plan (ITP) and in Versa-Care Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

G. Provides patients with guidelines for exercise to be followed at home.

H. Reviews patient progress on a regular basis, evaluating compliance with exercise prescription and patient response to exercise.

a. Updates exercise prescription as needed and document any change in response to exercise and/or in exercise prescription.

I. Documents on patient Individualized Treatment Plan (ITP) every 30 days; reassessment of exercise goals, response to exercise, discharge planning and, ongoing education of the patient.

J. Lectures at minimum once during curriculum lecture cycle.

K. Will be directly involved with and act as site supervisor for Clinic Student University Internship program.

L. Develops and updates the exercise curriculum with members of the interdisciplinary team including RN’s, ED, Pharmacist and Department Manager for the educational series.

M. Reinforces key points during exercise sessions while working one on one with patient

N. Communicates with the program director, medical director and/or cardiac nurse on a regular basis regarding any patient difficulties or adverse response to exercise.

O. Maintains exercise equipment schedules and supervision of on-site exercise component of clinical sessions.

P. Maintains exercise equipment. Schedules periodic calibration and maintenance of equipment with bio-med or outside vendors.

Q. Maintains the emergency equipment:

a. Documents readiness of equipment.

b. Orders supplies for emergency code cart, glucometer, and O2 tanks.

R. Provide cardiac education to community: PowerPoint, speaking, panel member, small group, etc.

S. Attends team meetings, updating staff on patient progress toward exercise goals, difficulties and readiness for discharge and staff competencies as related to exercise therapy.

T. May register patient for cardiac wellness programs and or change status from phase II to phase III.

a. Enters charges for any cardiac wellness program and components.

b. Audits and/or runs Daily Transaction Report (DTAR) on daily and/or monthly basis and follows up with adjustments needed and educates staff and reports to the Department Program Coordinator charge discrepancies.

U. Orders office supplies, medical supplies and orders/maintains linen inventory.

V. Works three community screening/community events annually.

W. Must have a full understanding of all exercise equipment including how to use, adjust, and implement equipment into a patient’s exercise prescription including resistance training modalities.
