In addition to the standard Job Description, this position must be available to support one weekend per month and train for inpatient, outpatient, and special event phlebotomy. PRN requests are for all shifts.
The Registrar/Phlebotomist is responsible for the courteous, accurate, and efficient pre-registration and registration of patients. Responsibilities include: verification of patient insurance coverage status, investigation of patient financial status, determination of payment viability, identification/recognition of ICD-9-CM codes for diagnostic and procedural information found on the outpatient physician requests and assisting in patient follow up. Collects blood samples from patients and returns them promptly to the Laboratory for analysis. Specimens are collected by a variety of techniques which include venipunctures, finger and heel sticks. The Registrar/ Phlebotomist also processes physician test requests for Laboratory and Radiology, enters test requests into the Laboratory Information System or the Hospital Information System as appropriate and instructs outpatients in the appropriate collection of non-blood specimens and preparation for Radiology procedures. Participates in the training of new employees, students and other Community Health Partners’ employees.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Familiarity with personal computers required; experience with McKesson-STAR and Cerner Lab systems preferred.
Ability to concentrate and pay attention to details.
Accurate typing skills at 30 wpm.
Prior registration experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
At least year of phlebotomy experience and/or Phlebotomy registration with an accreditation agency is preferred.
Current CPR certification is required.
Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations at a level normally acquired through completion of a high school education or equivalent is necessary. Orientation to a medical environment and knowledge of medical procedure and terminology is desirable. Completion of medical terminology course is preferred.
Regular (up to 50% of work time) exposure to infections when handling specimens but potential for personal harm or injury is limited when proper safety and health precautions are followed.
Moderate level of physical effort exerted 20% or more of work time.
Travel may be required to obtain specimens from off-site locations.
Pace is often very rapid for patient contact.
