Bon Secours Mercy Health Director, Spiritual Care in Lima, Ohio

The Leader of Spiritual Services promotes the Mission of Bon Secours Mercy Health (BSMH) through the development and implementation of a continuum of spiritual care services which align with the Professional Standards of Chaplaincy and the BSMH Standards of Excellence in Spiritual Care. The Director is responsible to develop, organize, and manage department activities pertaining to the provision of Spiritual Care within the Youngstown Market. The Director guides and educates patients, families, and employees, as well as communicates and provides liaison with the local religious community in accordance with the philosophy, mission statement and objectives of the ministry. Occasionally, the Director, certified through the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), or the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) performs the duties of the spiritual care staff. The Director, in conjunction with the CPE Certified Educator, provides oversight of the accredited CPE program. If ACPE credentialed, the Director may provide a unit or partial unit of CPE, if site has a CPE Program. The Director of Spiritual Care contributes to the integration and continuation of the Mission and Values of BSMH by assisting in coordinating efforts (including, but not limited to participation on the mission and ethics committees) to uphold the principles and traditions of the Catholic health ministry and the Ethical and Religious Directives (ERDs) for Catholic Health Care Services, the legacy of the founding sponsors, and a commitment to body, mind, and spirit health. The Director:

  • Leads, directs and manages the Spiritual Services department in a manner which best utilizes the professional skills of chaplains with a variety of clinical competencies.

  • Assures Spiritual Services is integrated into the multidisciplinary care team and integral to the broader care delivery system, including outpatient services.

  • Assures that sacramental ministry, spiritual support, and spiritual assessment is provided by chaplains, ordained clergy, Eucharistic ministers and pastoral associates.

  • Assumes responsibility for implementing the annual Spiritual Services Strategies.

  • Provides leadership in creating a spiritual environment that contributes to personal and organizational transformation that reflects the Mission of BSMH.

Minimum Position Qualifications:

  • A master's degree in Theology, Divinity, Spirituality, Pastoral Ministry or the equivalent applicable education from an accredited institution.

  • Ordained or endorsed for health care chaplaincy by a recognized body such as one's denomination or faith tradition.

  • Certified through the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), or the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC).

  • Knowledge of, and support for, the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services (6th ed, USCCB).

Preferred Position Qualifications:

  • Experience in a significant healthcare leadership role with clinical supervisory and operational decision-making responsibilities

  • 3 years of experience required
